A metallic element, symbol Cr, which does not occur in the free state, is remarkable for the brilliant colours of its compounds, has the atomic number 24, the atomic weight 51.996, is part of the group VIB of the Periodic Table, and is used as an alloying and plating element on metal and plastic substrates for corrosion resistance, in chromium-containing and stainless steels, as a protective coating for automotive and equipment accessories, in nuclear and high-temperature research and as a constituent of inorganic pigments.
