conservation: [The] planned management [by a governmental authority or by a private association or business] of a natural resource to prevent exploitation, destruction, or neglect. [For example:] wild-life conservation, conservation of the Northwest, [or as] the wise utilization of a natural product especially by a manufacturer so as to prevent waste and insure future use of resources that have been depleted.

conservancy: conservation especially of natural resources. [For example:] conservancy work being done on the ... rivers to control floods. [Note] specifically, means an organization designed and often government-sponsored to conserve and protect natural resources (as trees or wildlife).

Certains auteurs rendent cette notion en français par le terme «protection de l'environnement». Malheureusement, ce terme ne couvre pas complètement l'aire sémantique de la notion. La protection de l'environnement est, bien sûr, au centre des préoccupations des législateurs, mais elle ne constitue que l'aspect passif de la notion; en effet, cette notion comprend aussi un autre aspect, plus dynamique et en conformité avec les principes récents du développement durable, celui de l'utilisation rationnelle et à long terme à des fins économiques de l'environnement en question.
