In equipotential surveys the earth is energized with a pair of primary electrodes, about 2000 ft apart; across which a high-power gasoline generator maintains a voltage of around 200 volts.

L'appareillage de la méthode des lignes équipotentielles requiert une génératrice de courant alternatif à basse fréquence, au moins quatre électrodes métalliques, du câble, un voltmètre pour champ alternatif. Si on emploie du courant continu au lieu d'un courant alternatif, on utilise des piles sèches de haute tension au lieu de la génératrice et un voltmètre de champ continu.
