L'Erythroxylum coca, appelée encore coca huanuco ou coca bolivienne, pousse sur les versants est, humides et chauds, des hautes vallées andines, entre 500 et 1500 mètres d'altitude.

Tradicionalmente la planta de coca se ha cultivado en los valles al este de la cordillera oriental de los Andes, concretamente en la franja que se extiende entre las ciudades de La Paz (Bolivia) y el Cuzco (Perú). La coca (Erythroxylon coca), es una planta herbácea y perenne. Se cosechan sus hojas, mientras que en otras casos se sacan sus frutos y las flores.
