L'ethnicisation se réfère au processus (social, historique, politique) de construction de frontières et de désignation de groupes sociaux, groupes qui, en l'occurrence, sont définis (socialement) ou se définissent eux-mêmes par leur origine ou leur culture. [...] Parler d'ethnicisation en sociologie consiste non à poser a priori l'existence de groupes dits ethniques, mais bien au contraire à mettre l'accent sur le caractère relationnel ou construit de tels groupes ou catégories de personnes.
