En présence de surfaces présentant des excès de charges électriques, les ions ont tendance à se fixer plus ou moins fortement sur celles qui présentent une charge opposée. On dit qu'ils s'y adsorbent. Une des caractéristiques des argiles est précisément de présenter des surfaces chargées négativement entre les feuillets. Les cations peuvent donc s'y fixer.
