The component of the ground based interceptor that intercepts an incoming warhead and demolishes it by the force of impact in the midcourse (i.e., exoatmospheric) portion of its trajectory.

In addition to having an infrared seeker, the EKV has its own propulsion, communication link, discrimination algorithms, guidance and control system, and computers to support target selection and intercept decisions in the final seconds, or end game, of its flight.

À ce stade, l'intercepteur basé au sol (GBI) serait lancé. Il s'agit d'un missile fixe basé au sol conçu pour s'approcher d'une tête attaquante en dehors de l'atmosphère terrestre et de libérer sa charge, le véhicule tueur, qui se dirigera vers sa cible et la frappera. Le véhicule tueur devrait savoir discriminer les têtes, les leurres et les débris; les radars au sol et les capteurs des satellites continueront toutefois de lui envoyer des informations à mi-course pour accroître les chances d'une interception réussie.
