Une phrase non elliptique s'organise en un centre, appelé son prédicat, et une périphérie. Un exemple simple est celui de la phrase française «sa sœur est endormie», analysable en un prédicat «est endormie» et une périphérie, non-prédicat, «sa sœur». Mais à partir de cette condition minimale de dicibilité, les langues montrent une grande variété quant au degré de spécialisation de certains mots dans l'une ou l'autre de ces fonctions ou de celles qui peuvent se définir en rapport à chacune d'elles.
