EXTRACTIVE FERMENTATION [1 record]

Record 1 1993-05-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Fermentation system in which the product is continuously removed by extraction with a solvent that is insoluble in water, not harmful to the organism, simple to recover (e.g., by distillation) and in which the fermentation product is considerably more soluble than it is in water. The fermenter may be fed nutrient continuously or intermittently.

OBS

One advantage of this type of reactor is that products may be removed before they reach concentrations that limit the rate of fermentation by feedback inhibition. The disadvantage is that few, if any, solvents with the required properties have been identified.

DEF
