F-layer [is] the region of the ionosphere found approximately 90 to 400 miles above Earth and which is responsible for most long distance propagation on frequencies below 30 MHz. La région ionisée principalement responsable des communications à longue distance c'est la couche F. Elle s'ionise au lever du soleil, atteint très rapidement son maximum pour diminuer progressivement au coucher et atteindre son minimum juste avant le lever du jour. Au cours de la journée, la région F se divise en deux : la couche F1 (de 150 à 200 km du sol) n'est pas un moyen de propagation important et donc sa formation est directement dépendante du lever et du coucher du soleil.
