The term "failed back surgery syndrome" is a misnomer, as it is not actually a syndrome - it is a generalized term that is often used to describe the condition of patients who have not had a successful result with back surgery or spine surgery.

Il est malheureusement reconnu que la moitié des personnes qui ont subi une chirurgie à la colonne vertébrale voit leurs symptômes revenir quelques mois ou quelques années plus tard. Ils doivent alors envisager une nouvelle chirurgie. Ce cas, trop commun, est connu sous le nom de «séquelles de l'échec chirurgical rachidien».
