Si aucun fragment de la météorite n’a subsisté, une grande partie du nuage incandescent est retombée au fond du cratère, le recouvrant sur environ 80 m d’épaisseur d’un amas de roches constituant ce que les géologues appellent les brèches de retombée. L’onde de choc a également provoqué dans le fond du cratère des brèches de dislocation.

Le complexe [de Sudbury] est composé d'une séquence différenciée de norite quartzifère à la base, puis de gabbros quartzeux et granophyres. La formation sus-jacente riche en clastes a été interprétée comme une brèche de retombée suite à l’impact.
