In developed nations, a farmer [as a profession] is usually defined as someone with an ownership interest in crops or livestock, and who provides labor or management in their production.

Il connaît parfaitement les sols et les différents végétaux qu'il est possible de cultiver. Il maîtrise le travail de la terre et l'utilisation des engrais, le semis, la plantation, le désherbage et la récolte.

OBS

L'agriculteur peut être un exploitant individuel (propriétaire, fermier, salarié), un membre actif d'une société ou d'une coopérative agricole de production, ou encore un salarié d'une exploitation agricole (directeur, chef de cultures, ouvrier permanent [...]). Il peut donc s'agir aussi bien d'un grand entrepreneur agricole que d'un paysan travailleur.

In many, if not all, sugar beet producing areas of the United States, a grower will not seed sugar beets until he has a binding purchase contract for his crop with a processing company or cooperative.

OBS

The term "grower". Hence "tobacco farmer" is normally used in conjunction with certain crops: "sugarbeet grower" and "tobacco grower" are examples. When so used, the term can be replaced by "farmer" and "tobacco grower" can be used interchangeably according to the Canadian Classification and Dictionary of Occupations, 1971.
