Un métal soumis à des efforts variant de façon périodique dans le temps peut se rompre au bout d'un nombre suffisant de cycles même si l'effort est inférieur à la limite élastique. La rupture intervient sans déformation préalable. La cassure présente un faciès caractéristique en deux zones [...] On dit que le métal s'est rompu par fatigue.

[...] le processus d'altération d'un matériau par fatigue est le plus souvent lent et sa détérioration progressive.

Si le terme fatigue a été consacré par l'usage pour désigner la cause de cette défaillance en service [qu'est la rupture par fatigue], on a appelé endurance la propriété du métal à résister à la fatigue.

Deformación de una pieza sometida a repetidos esfuerzos aplicados alternativamente en direcciones opuestas.

CONT

Todos los metales, incluso los más maleables, pueden romperse si son sometidos a esfuerzos alternativos. Esta rotura por fatiga se debe a la formación de minúsculas estrías en los puntos donde la superficie del metal tiene defectos microscópicos.
