En français on trouve les spécifiques : jumelles de tourisme, de marine, d'artillerie, d'observation, de campagne; il ne semble pas exister de terme particulier pour s'opposer directement, comme en anglais, aux termes «jumelles de théâtre» ou «jumelles de spectacle».

Noter que le terme «lunette terrestre» s'oppose à «lunette astronomique» : la lunette terrestre est destinée à l'observation d'objets terrestres alors que la lunette astronomique est destinée à l'observation des astres et est différente dans son fonctionnement (images renversées).
