Au Canada, le gouvernement fédéral a mis en place, notamment depuis la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, un vaste programme de redistribution interrégionale dans le contexte du fédéralisme fiscal. Cette redistribution ne s'effectue pas seulement par le programme de péréquation mais également par la formule même du système fédéral, suivant laquelle les provinces contribuent aux recettes de l'administration centrale en fonction de leur capacité à payer mais retirent des enveloppes de dépenses proportionnelles à leur population ou à la demande en services.
