Fixed gauge are most often used in factories as a way of monitoring a production process and ensuring quality control. ... These fixed gauges consist of a radioactive source that is housed within a source holder and placed at a crucial point in the process. When the source holder's shutter is opened, an invisible beam of radiation is directed at the material being processed. A detector mounted opposite the source measures the radiation that passes through the material.
