Anatomy of the corals. ... The corallite is the part of the skeleton (corallum) deposited by one polyp and includes a skeletal wall (theca). Calcareous plate-like structures (septa) radiate from the wall to the center of the corallite. Other structures include the calice (the upper surface of the corallite), the coenosteum (the skeletal material underneath the coenosarc), and dissepiments (horizontal layers or partition of skeletal material, flat or curved, within or outside the corallite).

Taxonomie et biologie des coraux. Anatomie des Scléractiniaires. Le squelette. Le polype sécrète en sa partie inférieure un exosquelette de carbonate de calcium, le polypiérite, [qui] comprend à sa partie inférieure une lame calcaire, le plateau basal, d'où s'élève verticalement la thèque. Ces deux éléments délimitent une cavité, le lumen, divisé par des cloisons calcaires, les septes, qui se prolongent à l'extérieur de la thèque par les côtes. La partie axiale du polype est occupée par une structure squelettique verticale, la columelle. La partie supérieure du polypiérite, limitée par la thèque, porte le nom de calice.
