On utilise de nombreux formats, depuis le film dentaire de 2 x 3 cm, jusqu'au grand cliché de 36 x 43 cm pour le thorax ou de 30 x 90 cm pour la colonne vertébrale. Les films radiographiques classiques sont habituellement émulsionnés sur les deux faces et s'emploient dans une cassette comportant un ou deux écrans renforçateurs.
