The First Nations Policing Policy (FNPP) was introduced by the federal government in June 1991 to provide First Nations across Canada with access to police services that are professional, effective, culturally appropriate, and accountable to the communities they serve. The FNPP, administered by the Department of the Solicitor General since April 1992, operates on the principle of partnership. Under the Policy, the federal government, provincial and territorial governments and First Nations work together to negotiate tripartite agreements for police services that meet the particular needs of each community.

La politique sur la police des Premières nations a été adoptée par le gouvernement fédéral en juin 1991, pour que les Premières Nations du Canada puissent bénéficier de services de police professionnels, efficaces, adaptés à leurs cultures et dont les responsables rendent compte aux populations locales. La Politique, que le ministère du Solliciteur général applique depuis avril 1992, s'appuie sur le principe du partenariat. Elle permet au gouvernement fédéral, aux provinces, aux territoires et aux Premières Nations de négocier des accords tripartites de manière à mettre sur pied des services de police qui répondent aux besoins de chaque collectivité.

En 2012, Affaires autochtones et Développement du Nord Canada et le Bureau de la traduction ont recommandé les deux majuscules initiales au terme «Première Nation». Dans les appellations officielles, ce terme peut être orthographié différemment. Il faut alors respecter la graphie utilisée même si elle n'est pas conforme à cette recommandation.
