To make nutritious, perishable food more affordable in isolated communities, the federal government set up the Northern Air Stage Program. The program also known as the Food Mail Program is administered by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. The Department provides funding to Canada Post for transporting nutritious, perishable foods to isolated communities by air. This funding helps keep the cost of food down.

Afin de rendre plus abordable le prix des aliments nutritifs périssables dans les collectivités isolées, le gouvernement fédéral a mis sur pied le programme du Service aérien omnibus du Nord. En 1999-2000, le budget du programme est de 15,6 millions de dollars. Ce programme, également connu sous le nom de Programme d'approvisionnement alimentaire par la poste, est administré par le ministère des Affaires indiennes et du Nord canadien. Le Ministère octroie des fonds à Postes Canada pour assurer l'expédition par avion d'aliments nutritifs périssables aux collectivités isolées. Ce financement contribue à faire en sorte que le coût des aliments reste peu élevé.
