Il est judicieux d'intercaler entre le réservoir et la colonne une précolonne de 2 à 5 cm de long, de même diamètre, et raccordée par un raccord de même diamètre intérieur que la colonne. L'ensemble précolonne-colonne est utilisé tel quel pendant huit à quinze jours, puis quand la tête de précolonne est abîmée celle-ci est ôtée.
