Desde un punto de vista forestal se considera sumidero al "área por donde son canalizados el agua, los nutrientes o cualquier tipo de compuesto, físico o químico, o que sirve de almacén de los mismos. En la actualidad este término se aplica a los bosques para significar su papel en la absorción del anhídrido carbónico de la atmósfera y la consiguiente reducción del efecto invernadero".
