In response to follow-up questions from the Commission on the frequency of regulatory inspections, CNSC staff explained that it normally inspects the project two times per year and that one of those inspections is timed to coincide with the spring runoff period to ensure the flows are properly handled and that adequate freeboard on the settling ponds is maintained.

The filter media is carefully screened for size and uniformity to provide greatest filtration with a minimum of flow resistance. The vessel is filled to a predetermined level, leaving an allowance for expansion of the filter bed during the backwash cycle. This expansion allowance is termed the freeboard.
