French for the Future was conceived by John Ralston Saul and Toronto journalist Lisa Balfour Bowen after the conclusion of the Quebec referendum in 1995. The original goal of the founders was to demonstrate a commitment to bilingualism and French language education through programmes which provide information and encouragement to Canadian youth, while celebrating French language and culture.

Le français pour l'avenir/French for the Future a été fondé par Son Excellence John Ralston Saul et la journaliste de Toronto Lisa Balfour Bowen, à l'issue du référendum du Québec en 1995. L'objectif initial de ses fondateurs consistait à manifester un attachement au bilinguisme et à l'éducation en langue française par des programmes qui informeraient et encourageraient les jeunes Canadiens, tout en rendant hommage à la langue et à la culture françaises.
