Informations précédant le texte général d'une publication importante (page titre, copyright, table des matières, préface, etc.). En général, les préliminaires portent une numérotation différente de celle du texte général qui commence à la page 1 et est traité à part du texte général au moment de la composition.

Les préliminaires sont souvent composés une fois que le texte général a été paginé de façon à ce qu'on puisse déterminer le nombre de pages définitif avant d'envoyer les préliminaires à la machine à composer. Étant donné que les publications importantes sont imprimées par cahier de 8, 16 ou 32 pages, les préliminaires sont souvent regroupés de façon à ce que l'on obtienne un nombre de pages définitif sans trop de pages vierges.
