Du nom d'un météorologiste du début du siècle qui a longtemps étudié l'action réciproque de typhons dans le Pacifique occidental, cette action a parfois comme conséquence de mettre en rotation, de faire tournoyer en quelque sorte (d'où l'appellation de «valse» parfois employée à la place de «effet»), les deux cyclones l'un autour de l'autre, s'ils ont des intensités équivalentes, ou le plus faible autour du plus puissant.
