In a blockchain, fungible tokens are cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC). Nonfungible tokens are units of data that represent a unique digital asset stored and verified on the blockchain.

Afin de rendre un actif numérique indivisible, il est possible de faire usage du concept des jetons non fongibles. Le contraire de la non-fongibilité, c'est-à-dire la fongibilité, signifie qu'«[…] un actif peut être échangé contre un autre actif du même type et qu'aucune distinction entre les deux n'est possible […]». Les Bitcoins, par exemple, sont des jetons fongibles.
