Gapes is caused by the roundworm designated Syngamus trachealis which attaches to the mucous membrane of the trachea and causes severe inflammatory changes.

CONT

This parasite produces the condition commonly known as "gapes" because infested chickens "gape" and show difficulty in breathing.
