In all types of Islamic gardens, flowers were lavishly used. Their presence was even simulated in garden carpets and in the woven hangings that were used as temporary screens.

Quelques années avant la conquête arabe, vers la fin du VIe siècle, la tradition veut que les derniers souverains sassanides aient imaginé d'enfermer avec eux, pendant l'hiver, une image de leurs jardins. Ils la firent dessiner et tisser sur une immense tapisserie qui en reproduisait exactement la forme et les couleurs. Telle serait l'origine des grands tapis à motif de jardin dont la fabrication se poursuivra pendant douze ou treize siècles, et qui sont aujourd'hui pour nous de précieux documents.
