In Budget 2005, the federal government announced the creation of the Gas Tax Fund Transfer Payment Program. The purpose of this program is to share a portion of federal gas tax revenues in the amount of $5 billion over the next five years with the municipalities of all provinces and territories, as well as with First Nations communities. The transfer would amount to $600 million in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, $800 million in 2007-2008, $1 billion in 2008-2009, and $2 billion in 2009-2010.
