Mémoire centrale plus rapide, avènement des mémoires à couche mince, bonne fiabilité, mémoires de 32Ko et de 64Ko, temps d'addition de 5 microsecondes réduit à une microseconde, utilisation répandue des bandes magnétiques, introduction des disques et des gros tambours, les systèmes des moniteurs sont courants, largement exploités «en salle fermée». Age d'or des langages Fortran II et IV, Algol, Cobol et des langages polyvalents, avènement des mémoires à accès direct et des piles, avènement de la transmission de données par lignes téléphoniques.
