A human gene association study often involves several genomic markers such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or short tandem repeat polymorphisms, and many statistically significant markers may be identified during the study.

Les marqueurs génomiques, aujourd’hui couramment étudiés, sont des loci de courte séquence (2 à 5 nucléotides), répétés un nombre variable de fois, et appelés STR («Short Tandem Repeat» [séquence courte répétée en tandem]) ou microsatellites. Il s’agit donc d’un polymorphisme de taille qui présente surtout l’intérêt d’être poly-allélique, donc très informatif, et d’être réparti de façon à peu près uniforme sur l’ensemble du génome dans les espaces inter-géniques, dans les introns et les régions flanquantes des gènes.
