Spoutnik 1, le tout premier satellite artificiel, [fut] lancé en U.R.S.S. le 4 octobre 1957 [...] Spoutnik 2 fut lancé 30 jours plus tard. C'est un satellite nettement plus lourd (508 kg) il emportait la chienne Lâika, premier être vivant à avoir fait le tour de la Terre, mais l'animal ne fut malheureusement pas récupéré car Spoutnik 2 fut réduit en cendres le 14 avril 1958. Spoutnik 3, [fut] satellisé le 15 mai 1958. C'était un satellite géophysique en forme de cône de 13,5 m de long, sur 1,7 m de diamètre) pesant 1 327 kg son orbite le faisait évoluer [...] entre 217 km et 1 880 km. Il retomba après 690 jours, ayant donné de nombreuses données sur l'environnement terrestre.
