The transfer of an image to the zinc plate by mechanical means, using ink or wax, and the removal of nonprinting areas in a series of etching operations, each of which involved applying a coating of ink to the sidewalls of the etched lines by means of resilient rollers.

Firmin Gillot, ouvrier lithographe, mit au point en 1850 un procédé nouveau. C'était le décalque d'un dessin lithographique, avec toutes ses finesses de trait et de pointillés, sur une planche de zinc qu'il mordait ensuite à l'acide. Il obtenait ainsi un cliché typographique reproduisant le dessin de l'artiste.

Ce procédé, qu'il appela panéiconographie, connut rapidement une grande extension sous le vocable plus répandu de gillotage.
