A gyroscope has three sensitive axes of interest. These are (1) spin reference axis (SRA), (2) input axis (IA), and (3) output axis (OA)... The output axis is that axis, which the wheel precesses, and may be thought of as a line through the center of the gimbal element bearings (i.e., pivots).

Le gyroscope de Foucault est une toupie rectifiée [...] montée sur un axe dont les deux extrémités sont fixées sur un anneau lui-même suspendu aux deux extrémités du diamètre perpendiculaire à celui de l'axe qui porte la masse de cuivre, de sorte que celle-ci peut prendre toutes les inclinaisons possibles sur l'horizon. Les deux pivots de ce premier anneau reposent sur un deuxième anneau plus grand, monté lui-même sur pivots lui permettant une rotation verticale. [...] Il résulte donc de ce mode de suspension que l'axe de la masse est entièrement libre [et] en équilibre dans toutes les positions. [...] Si on fixe horizontalement l'anneau intérieur, l'axe de rotation ne pourra plus se déplacer que dans un plan horizontal.
