Fort build by the Gitwangaks First Nation during the 18th century.

In March 2006, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) approved a name change for this national historic site. The name was formerly "Kitwanga Fort" and the new name is "Gitwangak Battle Hill."

"Gitwangak" is the correct Gitksen language spelling of the name of the First Nation.
