En 2004, 17 geoparques europeos y 8 geoparques chinos se reunieron en la sede de la UNESCO en París para formar la Red Mundial de Geoparques (GGN) donde las iniciativas nacionales de protección del patrimonio geológico contribuyen y se benefician de su pertenencia a una red mundial de intercambio y cooperación.
