All vertebrates having a true pair of jaws formed from the visceral arch skeleton, as distinct from the Cyclostomata (e.g. lampreys) which have a circular mouth without jaws. All true fish as well as amphibia, reptiles, birds and mammals are gnathostomata.

La seconde grande division des Vertébrés se caractérise par la disparition de l'arc prémandibulaire et la différenciation des mâchoires à partir de l'arc mandibulaire (palato-carré et cartilage de Meckel) qui entre en connexion selon des modes divers, avec l'arc hyoïdien. C'est la division des Gnathostomes comprenant les Poissons, les Amphibiens, les Reptiles, les Oiseaux et les mammifères de la classification courante.
