Each year, the mayors meet in one of the municipalities located along the Great Lakes or St. Lawrence. In addition to hearing experts talk about the status of the system, mayors adopt unified positions and make recommendations on matters related to the protection, promotion and development of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence system. The resolutions the Mayors consider concern water levels, transportation, port and commercial development, dredging, waterfront development, water quality, tourism and many other topics.

In May 2005, the International Association of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Mayors was merged with the Great Lakes Cities Initiative. The resulting organization, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, is headquartered in Chicago.

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSLCI) is a binational coalition of mayors and other local officials that works actively with federal, state, and provincial governments to advance the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes.

En plus d'y entendre des conférences d'experts sur la situation du système, les Maires prennent des positions communes et émettent des recommandations sur des questions reliées à la protection, la défense et la promotion du système Saint-Laurent Grands Lacs. Les résolutions qui en découlent concernent les niveaux d'eau, le système de transport, le développement portuaire et commercial, le dragage, l'aménagement des berges, la qualité de l'eau, le tourisme, et bien d'autres sujets.
