Herring Gull eggs from several sites throughout the Great Lakes are monitored on an annual basis for a wide variety of organochlorine and heavy metal contaminants in order to assess the biological damage caused by the presence of persistent pollutants in the environment and to assess the effectiveness of efforts to prevent or reduce contamination by toxic chemicals in the Great Lakes basin.
