Le chantage financier («Greenmail») constitue une tactique par laquelle un investisseur, auteur du chantage (le «Greenmailer»), commence par accumuler subtilement des actions de la cible au prix du marché sans payer de prime de contrôle, mettant ainsi un pied dans la société («Toe Hold»). Puis, une fois devenu un actionnaire important de la cible, l'auteur du chantage menace d'en prendre le contrôle.
