Les haubans souples sont constitués par des câbles d'acier travaillant uniquement en traction. Les haubans rigides, qui peuvent aussi travailler en compression, sont généralement constitués par des tubes métalliques profilés, afin d'offrir une faible résistance à l'avancement. Les haubans ne sont pratiquement plus utilisés, sauf sur des avions légers et ultralégers, dont la faible vitesse limite la pénalisation due à l'accroissement de la traînée aérodynamique.
