Gyres are large and permanent, and occupy the northern and southern halves of the three major oceans. They move clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

La variabilité des courants marins se manifeste par la présence de tourbillons de différentes dimensions. Les scientifiques anglo-saxons, les appellent «eddies» et les classent par taille croissante en «swirl» entre 10 et 100 km, «ring» entre 100 et 500 km, au-delà en «gyre» : en français remous, anneau, et circulation.
