Les deux premiers satellites SPOT sont équipés chacun de deux instruments H.R.V. identiques susceptibles de fonctionner selon différentes configurations des champs de prise de vues et selon différents modes spectraux.

Conventionnellement, on appelle instrument H.R.V.-1 l'instrument situé en avant dans le sens du défilement du satellite et instrument H.R.V.-2 celui situé en arrière de l'instrument H.R.V.-1.
