Il n'est pas toujours possible de stabiliser une rive en employant uniquement des végétaux. Lorsque les conditions sont sévères, il peut être justifié d'utiliser des moyens mécaniques notamment dans le cas d'un remaniement du sol effectué sur une rive en pente forte. Les moyens mécaniques de stabilisation des rives sont des ouvrages constitués de matériaux solides (roche, béton, acier, bois traité), capables de résister aux forces érosives actives (vagues, courants, glaces).
