L'étude du mouvement d'une comète dans l'espace repose sur la connaissance des positions qu'elle occupe (...). A moins de 1,5 U.A. du Soleil, elle présente une tête plus ou moins arrondie et une queue grossièrement opposée au Soleil. A l'intérieur de la tête, on distingue un noyau brillant de très petit diamètre apparent, entouré d'une enveloppe diffuse dégradée vers les bords, la chevelure.
