A filarial worm (Dirofilaria immitis) that is especially common in warm regions, lives as an adult in the right heart of dogs and some other carnivores, and discharges active larvae into the circulating blood whence they may be picked up by mosquitoes and transmitted to other hosts.

Dirofilaria immitis est une filaire sanguicole des chiens, des régions tropicales et subtropicales, qui parvient à l'état adulte dans le cœur droit et l'artère pulmonaire; ce sont les microfilaires circulant dans le sang que l'on retrouve chez les insectes hématophages. Cette filaire peut parasiter occasionnellement l'homme, chez qui elle est en impasse sans parvenir à maturité, et provoquer notamment des lésions pulmonaires.
