Le plus grand nombre des Gastéropodes ont une coquille dissymétrique. Géométriquement, une telle coquille est une «spirale gauche», s'opposant aux spires planes ou discoïdes du type simple mais restant dans l'espace d'une spirale logarithmique, enroulée dans un cône enveloppe. Nous nommerons ces coquilles «spires hélicoïdales». La hauteur des tours successifs, mesurée sur l'axe d'enroulement croît selon une progression géométrique.
