The antibody to the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus. It develops well after convalescence from infection, lasts lifelong, and confers protection against subsequent infection. Hepatitis B vaccine is designed to elicit high titers of this antibody.

Hépatite à virus B. [...] Trois marqueurs sont détectables en cas de guérison : l'anticorps anti-HBs (Ac antiHBs), l'anticorps anti-HBe (Ac-anti-HBe) et l'anticorps anti-HBc (Ac anti-HBc). L'anticorps anti-HBc est donc présent aussi bien en cas d'infection que de guérison; cet anticorps est de classe IgM en cas d'infection récente et de classe IgG en cas de guérison.
